First Job!

The transition from being a student to a new professional can be an adjustment to say the least. So is  still trying to figure out what you specifically want to do with your career. Yes, the pressure is on to land a job to gain experience, pay the bills and establish yourself, but it's about finding the right fit in this new transition period. Just because you are not making enough so that you don't need to see the price tag while shopping, doesn't mean that your first job is worthless.

I am still at my first job as a 'Deputy executive' at 'Institute of Computer Accountants Eduskills'. Some things I learnt from my first job:-
  1. Skills, competence and enthusiasm are your security in this world. Your energy and attitude is your primary currency so invest in yourself. It will allow you to be present in your work for optimal returns. Smile and carry positive attitude, people respond to kindness.
  2. Be professional. Avoid gossip. Keep your private life private!
  3. Punctuality: Always reach at the expected time. Work life balance is necessary. One must reach office on time and leave office on time. Never, never be late for meetings.
  4. Curiosity is essential: Asking the right questions or even admitting that one's knowledge is not absolute earns bonus points.
  5. It is most important to learn to say "yes" and "no".
  6. Co-workers: Co-workers can become great friends. It is important to  make work-friends. A casual 'good morning' and 'Thank you' can do wonders. Some co-workers are shockingly negligent employees!
  7. Never be afraid to put yourself out there and stand out from the crowd. Even if it means wearing a silly outfit that may or may not make you look like a clown.
  8. You can't avoid Office politics. Doesn't matter if you are a janitor or a CEO. There are always office politics. They are way more important than one's job performance. It took me a while to comprehend what things people actually fight about, the favoritism structure. It's okay to feel like things are not going too well. Rather than dwelling on the challenges, stay focused, positive and offer valuable solutions.
  9. Monotony is part of every job but not succumbing to it is the choice you make: Find ways to break the monotony. Look for new challenges to keep learning. Involve yourself in discussions with peers. Explore their learning and perspective about life.
  10. Always be a good listener as you might never know whose skill sets or interests may help you in future projects or entrepreneur venture.
  11. People have different reasons to be at the company: While some are there to make living, there are others who are just in to obtain experience and move on to greener pastures; the latter have more direction and purpose in life.
  12. Are you being treated poorly? Are you not credit for your impressive efforts? Do you want to be involved in a new development at work? People aren't mind readers. Raise your hand and speak up. Silence kills us slowly.
  13. If this job is not your dream it will give invaluable experience.

Experiences are what we are, sharing them let us know what we could be!!
